Day 8 – Road to Hana

Today was checkout day at Kihei Surfside – I’ll miss that rooster – NOT!

KS was wonderful. Nice size condo, awesome views, full kitchen, convenient location – couldn’t ask for anything more. We rented 612 from and would rent it again in a heartbeat.

Woke up beautiful blue skies (finally), packed the car, stopped at Starbucks for coffee, Safeway for lunch and dinner and we were on the way.

Listening to the radio we had to laugh – they were complaining about the cold at 68 degrees. I guess it is all a matter of perspective.

I tend to be carsick very easily so I took 2 dramamine with my coffee and had no issues the whole drive.

The drive was about what I thought it would be in terms of curves and narrowness. I could not believe how many times the road became one lane – that was a little scary. Combine that with “those people” who pull to the side anywhere and stand on the one lane bridges taking pictures – ummm probably not the best idea.

First stop was Garden of Eden, glad we made the stop – it was lovely. From the ducks that would not let you down the road, the beautiful peacock putting on a show, the flowers, the views – just a beautiful place well worth the price of admission.

Thought this was humorous

Any idea what these are?

View of the falls.

I had to get out and be sure we didn’t hit any of them.duckcrossing

We had wanted to stop at the Honomanu Bay Lookout but it was too full – we will catch it tomorrow on the way back.

Then on to Keanae Peninsula – you were all correct. The views were awesome, the surf was putting on quite a show for us. Just watched in awe of mother nature.

He was looking for something, no one knew what.

And how could we be at Keanae and NOT get Aunt Sandy’s Banana Bread? We couldn’t obviously. Banana bread and juicy pineapple to have after lunch. YUM

Then it was off to Waianapanapa State Park. We had our picnic lunch, some banana bread and fresh pineapple slices. Then we took in some more breathtaking scenery. The beautiful black beach, the kind of active blowhole, the waves crashing, just awesome.

We went to the black sand beach and hiked up and past it to take in all the views. Pictures don’t do it justice.

I loved all the carvings into the leaves. Hana graffiti

Anyone else see the Sphinx in here?

Or Planet of the Apes ape face in here? waianapanapa2

Then a short drive to our home for the night Hana Kai – Beautiful condo right on the water. Great views. Full kitchen. Free wifi!!!

Condo rear lanai view.

Tonight is dinner on the BBQ and tomorrow an early start for the Pipiwai Trail, Oheo Gulch and I want to photo the Surfboard Fence in Haiku on the way back.

Then we check in at Mahana for our last 4 nights – boy is it going fast!!!

All in all – I really enjoyed the drive and the day – would I do it again? Probably not, but now I can cross RTH off my bucket list!
